Will conservatives be Obama’s ‘best allies’ in the climate fight?

January 5th, 2009 · No Comments

Bob Inglis (R-S.C.) and Arthur Laffer had an op-ed claiming that a revenue-neutral “tax shift” would make conservatives “the new administration’s best allies on climate change.” Color me skeptical. Laffer, of course, is a conservative legend, an economist whose curve has given a great many mendacious right-wing legislators intellectual cover in the war on taxes. Inglis is best known for telling Mitt Romney that Mormons ar

New Assault Weapons Ban Coming?

January 5th, 2009 · No Comments

From Michael Bane, comes The Shooting Wire: Democratic insiders are telling us the firearms industry will be used as an object lesson to both sides of the aisle. To the left, it’s the always-popular smackdown of a group of right-wing loonies (that’s you and me, by the way) who want gunfights on the streets of our hometowns. To the right, it will represent a little payback for the rhetoric that was taken very personally by the incoming administration. In other words, a little taste of the whi

Right-Wing Media’s Human Capital Problem

January 5th, 2009 · No Comments

I was observing the other day that the big problem conservatives are facing in the new media climate is that despite a plethora of outlets they don’t have the skills to generate original information and research products in nearly the same volume that generally progressive outlets manage. And to clarify, the issue here is a human capital deficit rather than a financial one. There are a great many people employed in conservative media, and thus conservative media could easily support the salar
